Jayden Barreto Obituary, Columbus, GA Death: 24-Year-Old Man Identified After Fatal Jump From Chimney Rock at Lake Martin
The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who died following a tragic jump from Chimney Rock at Lake Martin as 24-year-old Jayden Barreto of the Columbus, Georgia area.
According to Sheriff Bill Franklin, Barreto was visiting the popular overlook with friends on a college graduation outing when the incident occurred. Officials said he jumped from the well-known Chimney Rock ledge and did not resurface afterward, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Emergency crews, including marine units and divers, were dispatched to the scene as search efforts began on the lake. The area, known for its steep drop-offs and deep underwater terrain, made recovery operations especially challenging. Authorities conducted an extensive search that lasted several hours before divers located Barreto’s body on a submerged shelf approximately 50 feet below the surface. Beyond that point, the lake depth reportedly drops an additional 70 feet, further complicating recovery efforts.
Sheriff Franklin described Chimney Rock as a particularly dangerous location, warning that jumps from that height carry extreme risk due to both the impact force and unpredictable water entry conditions. He compared the impact to striking “a sheet of glass from 60 feet up,” underscoring the severity of potential injuries even for experienced swimmers.
Following the recovery, Barreto’s body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. Officials have not indicated any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, and the case is being treated as a tragic accidental death.
Chimney Rock at Lake Martin is a well-known recreational destination that attracts swimmers, boaters, and cliff jumpers, particularly during warmer months and holiday weekends. However, it has also been the site of repeated accidents over the years, prompting local authorities to regularly caution visitors about the risks associated with jumping from elevated rock formations.
News of Barreto’s death has left friends, family members, and members of the Lake Martin community grieving the sudden loss. Those who knew him are remembering a young man who was celebrating a major life milestone with friends before the tragic accident occurred.
As the community processes the loss, officials are again urging the public to exercise extreme caution around high-risk areas of the lake. They emphasize that even experienced swimmers can be seriously injured or killed in seemingly routine recreational jumps due to depth changes, submerged hazards, and the force of impact.
The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office continues to encourage visitors to enjoy Lake Martin safely and to respect posted warnings in hazardous areas.
