Highway 18 Accident Incident Today: Undisclosed One Dead Following Crash Near Skutz Falls Road

A fatal crash occurred on Thursday on Highway 18 near Skutz Falls Road, resulting in one death and causing major disruption along the rural route on Vancouver Island.

Emergency crews responded after reports of a serious collision involving at least one vehicle. Upon arrival, responders found a heavily damaged vehicle and attempted life-saving measures, but one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of next of kin.

The crash led to a temporary closure of Highway 18, a key connection between Duncan and Lake Cowichan. Traffic was heavily delayed as police, fire, and ambulance crews secured the area, investigated the scene, and cleared debris.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the collision. They are reviewing factors such as road and weather conditions, visibility, speed, and vehicle condition. No confirmation has been made regarding whether other vehicles were involved or whether impairment or mechanical failure played a role.

Highway 18 is known for its winding, forested stretches and limited visibility in some areas, especially near Skutz Falls, which can make driving conditions more hazardous.

The road is expected to reopen once investigation and cleanup work are complete. Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution on rural highways and remain alert to changing road conditions.
