Findorff Accident:Construction Worker Injured After Lift Collapse in Downtown Madison

Construction Worker Injured After Lift Collapse at Downtown Madison Site

A construction worker was injured Wednesday morning after a lift tipped over at a downtown Madison construction site, prompting a large emergency response and temporary street closures as crews worked to secure the area and assist the injured worker.

According to the Madison Fire Department, emergency crews responded around 10:47 a.m. to the intersection of Bassett Street and West Johnson Street following reports of a worker dangling from a building after scaffolding collapsed at an active construction project operated by Findorff.

Officials said crews had been using a telehandler, a large lifting machine commonly found on construction sites, to reposition scaffolding attached to the exterior of the building. For reasons still under investigation, the telehandler reportedly tipped over, causing the scaffolding structure to collapse into the street below.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as one worker, who had been standing on the scaffolding during the incident, briefly clung to the side of the building before falling an estimated 30 feet to the ground. Emergency responders said the worker fell approximately two to three stories before nearby workers rushed to provide assistance.

By the time firefighters from Engine 1 arrived, the injured worker was already receiving aid from coworkers. Emergency medical teams evaluated him at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital. Authorities stated that the worker’s injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening, though the full extent of those injuries has not been publicly released.

Firefighters found the collapsed scaffolding scattered across the roadway with the overturned telehandler partially pinned beneath it. Crews immediately secured the scene, checked for additional victims, and addressed hazardous conditions caused by leaking fuel and oil from the overturned equipment. Officials later confirmed no additional injuries were reported.

The incident led to the temporary closure of Bassett Street while emergency personnel and construction crews worked to stabilize and remove the damaged equipment. Traffic disruptions affected portions of the downtown area during the late morning hours. Madison Fire Department officials said the emergency response portion of the incident concluded around 11:15 a.m., though cleanup efforts continued afterward.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the telehandler to overturn. Investigators and safety inspectors are expected to review construction site operations, equipment stability, and safety procedures as part of the ongoing investigation.

The injured worker’s identity has not been publicly released, and no additional updates regarding his condition have been provided at this time.
