Nathan Harrell Injured Saving Kayla Gilbert After I-840 Crash in Rutherford County, Tennessee

In the early hours of a quiet Sunday morning, a serious crash on Interstate 840 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, turned into a story of courage and quick thinking that has since drawn widespread attention. The incident, which occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m., involved a single-vehicle crash that left Kayla Gilbert, a local resident, injured and trapped in a dangerous position on the highway.

According to early accounts from witnesses and emergency responders, Gilbert was traveling eastbound when her vehicle suddenly suffered a tire blowout. The car reportedly lost control, veered across the lane, and collided forcefully with a concrete median barrier. The impact caused significant damage to the front of the vehicle and left it partially obstructing traffic in a live lane of the interstate.

In the immediate aftermath, Gilbert was left disoriented, injured, and unable to safely exit the vehicle. Passing traffic on the dimly lit highway created an additional hazard, as approaching vehicles had limited time to react to the crash scene. It was at this critical moment that Nathan Harrell, a commercial truck driver traveling along the same stretch of roadway, encountered the wreckage.

Rather than continuing past or waiting at a distance, Harrell reportedly brought his truck to a controlled stop on the shoulder and immediately rushed toward the damaged vehicle. Witnesses describe him as moving quickly but carefully, aware of the danger posed by oncoming traffic. Despite the risk to his own safety, he approached the driver’s side of the car, where Gilbert was trapped inside.

Harrell is believed to have spoken to Gilbert to keep her conscious and calm while assessing how to safely remove her from the wreckage. With vehicles still passing nearby at highway speeds, the situation remained extremely hazardous. In a decisive moment, he helped guide her out of the vehicle and away from the most dangerous section of the roadway before further emergency personnel arrived.

Shortly afterward, emergency services reached the scene, providing medical treatment and transporting Gilbert to a nearby hospital. She was reported to have sustained injuries, including head trauma and lacerations, but is expected to recover.

Officials have since praised Harrell’s actions, noting that his quick response likely prevented the situation from becoming far worse. While he also sustained injuries during the rescue, including damage to his back and ribs after a fall during the incident, his condition was described as stable.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash, but early reports highlight Harrell’s intervention as a powerful example of selflessness in a life-threatening emergency.
