Saddle Road Accident Today: Fatal Crash Shuts Down Portions of Daniel K. Inouye Highway
A deadly head-on collision on Saddle Road, also known as the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, has left two people dead and caused significant disruption across Hawaii Island as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
According to the Hawaii Police Department, the crash occurred near mile marker 26, roughly two miles from the Mauna Kea Access Road junction, along the major east–west corridor that connects Hilo and the Kona side of the island. The highway was temporarily shut down in both directions while emergency responders worked at the scene and investigators began documenting evidence.
Preliminary findings indicate the collision involved a 2011 Toyota Corolla traveling eastbound toward Hilo and a 2016 Hyundai Tucson traveling westbound. Police reported that the Toyota attempted to pass another vehicle in a designated no-passing or restricted visibility area, crossing into oncoming traffic and striking the SUV head-on.
Two fatalities were confirmed. Authorities identified one victim as 70-year-old Todd Matsushita of Hilo. The second victim, 34-year-old Zachary Winston of Newport News, Virginia, was reportedly still alive when emergency crews arrived but later died from his injuries. Matsushita was transported for emergency treatment but was also pronounced dead.
Emergency responders described a severe impact consistent with high-speed travel. Investigators believe that speed and unsafe passing may have played key roles in the crash, though the full reconstruction remains ongoing. Officials are examining vehicle positions, roadway markings, and debris patterns to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the collision.
The accident forced extended closures along Daniel K. Inouye Highway, commonly referred to as Saddle Road, a critical transportation route that crosses Hawaii Island’s interior volcanic terrain. Traffic was backed up for miles as motorists were diverted or instructed to avoid the area entirely while crews cleared the wreckage.
This stretch of highway has long been considered one of the more hazardous routes on the island due to its combination of high speed limits, long rural stretches, changing weather conditions, and limited passing zones. Local residents and frequent travelers have repeatedly raised concerns about dangerous driving behavior, particularly illegal passing and excessive speed.
Following the crash, officials reopened the roadway after several hours once investigators completed their initial on-scene documentation. However, authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and further updates may be released as more information becomes available.
The tragedy has deeply affected both local residents and visitors, with many expressing condolences to the families of the victims. Community members have also renewed calls for increased caution on Saddle Road, along with discussions about whether additional safety measures or enforcement changes may be needed to prevent similar incidents.
As investigators continue their work, officials are urging all drivers to remain alert, obey passing restrictions, and reduce speed, especially on long rural highways where conditions can change quickly and consequences of mistakes can be severe.
